Why this app exists

The distance between wanting to move and moving.

Decision fatigue. The 9pm catalog scroll. Paywall rage. A streak at zero. Four things people keep saying about workout apps, in their own words. None of them are Rep Today users; the app has none yet. They are the reason it is built the way it is.

Decision fatigue

Too many steps between wanting a workout and starting one

"I need an app that requires little decision-making ... I need the app to tell me exactly what to do."

A Hacker News commenter describing the workout app they wanted. Source

Rep Today never asks. The session is on screen when the app opens, with one Start button.

The 9pm catalog scroll

Scrolling a workout library is not working out

"excessive scrolling, multiple clicks to get to something"

An App Store reviewer of another fitness app. Source

There is no catalog to browse. One session, already built, sized to your default duration.

Paywall rage

A subscription sheet standing between you and a workout

"you cannot use this app unless you pay for it. You just can't."

An App Store reviewer of another fitness app. Source

Every Rep Today workout is free, forever. The paywall never gates a session.

A streak at zero

One missed day erasing months of showing up

"That was it, back to 0, through no fault of my own."

A Hacker News commenter on a habit app's streak. Source

Rep Today has no streaks. A missed day can dent your Consistency Score. Nothing can ever zero it.

Pillar 1 - It opens ready

Nothing to answer, nothing to pick.

You do not pick a workout. It is on screen when the app opens. Here is exactly how that works, including where AI is involved and where it is not.

1. The engine

Every session is built on your phone

A deterministic on-device engine assembles each session from a 57-movement library in under 100 milliseconds, fully offline. No server, no login, no quiz. The session is on screen before you could have typed a password.

2. The tuning

It adjusts between sessions, on your phone

Between sessions, the app quietly adjusts how fast you progress, what gets emphasized, and how much variety you see. At launch that tuning is deterministic logic running on your phone, not AI. Exactly one optional line of text in the app is AI-generated, and it always has an offline fallback.

Nothing about the tuning ever sits between opening the app and pressing Start. The engine assembles every session itself.

3. The duration chip

Change one thing in one tap

Got 20 minutes instead of 10? One tap on the duration chip, anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes, and the new session is there before your thumb lifts. It never asks "how long do you have?", and Start is never disabled while it happens.

"Making the decision can be emotionally and mentally taxing, whereas if I rely on the default ... the rest of the day just flows from that without the decision fatigue."
A Hacker News commenter on why a default beats a decision. Not a Rep Today user; we don't have any yet. Source

Pillar 2 - Planned pricing

Free means the workouts. All of them. Forever.

The paywall never gates a workout. Premium unlocks depth, not the core loop. Premium exists so the people who want more depth fund the app, instead of the workouts being taxed. Prices below are planned and may change before launch.

Free

$0

  • Unlimited workouts, forever
  • All durations, 5 to 60 minutes
  • All three pillars, all 57 movements
  • Works offline, no account needed

Premium, planned

$7.99 /month, or $59.99 /year

  • 14-day trial
  • Deeper analytics on your training, from day one
  • The Strength Phase, included the moment your consistency and cleared movement tiers unlock it

Until the Strength Phase unlocks, Premium is the analytics. The Strength Phase changes how sessions are programmed; every session remains free to generate and start.

"the app won't do anything until you sign up for the free trial (which, if you forget, will convert to paid)"
A Hacker News commenter on another app's trial. It is the pattern this pricing is built against. Source

Pillar 3 - The score

Missing a day never zeroes you out.

Rep Today keeps a Consistency Score. It is a forgiving rolling average, not a streak. A 5-minute session counts as a full show-up. Miss a day and your score dips. It never resets. Come back after a gap and the app serves a session that is easy and winnable, and it celebrates the return instead of penalizing it.

You're someone who moves, not someone who owes.

There is no XP, no levels, no badges, and no leaderboards anywhere in the app.

"Then after 200 days, I lost my streak and... breathed a sigh of relief."
A Hacker News commenter on a language app's streak. Not about Rep Today; it is the mechanic we chose not to build. Source

Pillar 4 - Zero equipment

A floor and a wall. That is the whole equipment list.

Airplane mode, hotel room, basement with no bars. The session still builds, on your phone, not on a server.

Zero equipment

The hotel room test

All 57 movements need a floor and a wall. Nothing sneaks in later: no bands in week three, no pull-up bar in month two.

Fully offline

No signal required

Sessions are generated on-device, deterministically. The app works the same with the network off as on.

No account

Nothing to sign up for

The app works fully without an account. Sign in with Apple is optional and exists only for private iCloud sync.

Pillar 5 - The library

Mobility is a pillar, not a warm-up.

Half your session can be the part other apps skip. Every one of the 57 movements works in a hotel room: no bands, no bar, no bench, ever.

Mobility

Co-primary, not a warm-up. Mobility work is programmed for how a desk day actually feels, and it earns full space in the session, weighted equally with strength and primal in the engine.

Bodyweight strength

Push, hinge, squat, and hold patterns with nothing but your body. Difficulty backs off immediately when a session was too hard and climbs gradually when it was too easy.

Primal movement

Crawls, holds, and ground work as a first-class pillar. The part of the library that makes a patch of floor feel like enough room to train.

About

What we mean by discipline.

There is a word this page has avoided until now: discipline.

Most fitness marketing uses it as a whip. Discipline as a 5am alarm, discipline as punishment, discipline as proof of character. We think that reading is wrong, and worse, useless at 9pm on a Tuesday when the kids are finally down and you have ten minutes and half a phone battery.

Discipline is not effort. Discipline is showing up.

Every decision between "I should work out" and "I am working out" is friction, and friction is what kills consistency.

So Rep Today deletes the decisions. The session is already on the screen when you open the app. Five minutes counts as a full show-up. Missing yesterday costs you nothing today. The enemy this app is built against is not your character. It is the stack of small choices - which workout, how long, which program, is this the right one - that stands between wanting to move and moving.

Put plainly: the app is the disciplined one. It does the preparing, the deciding, the remembering, the adjusting. Every day it lays a complete session out before you arrive, the way a friend might leave your shoes by the door. What is left for you is the only part that was ever yours to do: press Start.

You're someone who moves. The app's whole job is to make that the easiest true thing you prove today.

FAQ

Fair questions

What is Rep Today not?

It is not a strength program, not coaching, and not a replacement for a gym. It is the app for the days when the gym was never going to happen: a real session, sized to the time you actually have, already on screen.

Why are there no streaks?

A streak counts what you could lose, and losing one is a common reason people quit an app for good. Rep Today keeps a Consistency Score instead: a rolling average that dips when you miss and recovers when you return. You're someone who moves. The score's job is to reflect that, not to threaten it.

Does it need internet?

No. Every session is generated on your phone, offline, in under 100 milliseconds. There is exactly one optional online nicety, a single line of session description, and it always has an offline fallback. Nothing between opening the app and starting a workout waits on a network. Buying Premium and optional iCloud sync do use one, like anything that talks to a store or a cloud.

Can I build my own workout?

No. You can change the duration in one tap and swap a movement mid-session, but the app decides so you don't have to. If you want a fully customizable workout planner, this is honestly not that app.

Do I need an account?

No. The app works fully without one. Sign in with Apple is optional and exists only to sync your history through your private iCloud. If you turn on iCloud sync or Apple Health, iOS asks its own permission questions; nothing asks before your first session.

Will I run out of movements?

You don't run out of a movement, you climb it. Strength and primal movements sit in progression chains, and the engine starts you at the tier you have reached, moving you up only once you have cleared the one below it. Each movement pattern has easier and harder tiers: the push-up pattern starts as gently as a wall push-up and climbs through the knee and standard push-up toward the diamond and archer push-up, and the squat pattern runs from a wall sit up toward the shrimp squat and pistol squat. It is a push-up the whole way up, and it does not stay the same push-up.

Across a session it is the combination that varies. Sessions draw on three pillars - bodyweight strength, mobility, primal movement - and the engine keeps a variety window, so movements you did recently rotate out of the mix before they come back. Your first week is deliberately varied across all three pillars.

The library is 57 movements, and if what you want is a catalog to browse, this is honestly not that app. Every movement here needs a floor and a wall, and the strength and primal work in it has somewhere further to go.

Aren't some free tiers already good?

Yes. Nike Training Club's free tier, for one, is genuinely praised by its own reviewers (source). Rep Today's free promise is aimed at the apps that put the workout itself behind a subscription sheet, not at the apps that already give theirs away. What Rep Today adds on top of free is the rest of the stack at once: instant open, offline, question-free.

Is my data sold?

Never sold. There are no ads, and the core loop needs no account: your history lives on your device, with optional sync to your own private iCloud, and workouts are written to Apple Health only if you choose.

Two things to be plain about. The app plans minimal anonymous usage measurement - events like session starts and completions, carrying a random per-install ID, never an email or advertising ID. And the pre-launch waitlist holds the email you add to it, so we can tell you when the app ships - nothing more. None of that is ever sold either.

When does it launch?

It hasn't yet. Rep Today is pre-launch: the core loop is built and tested, but the app is not on the App Store. iOS first, iOS 17 or later, no Android at launch. The waitlist is open now - add your email and we'll tell you the day it ships - but there is no date to announce yet.
